THE ESSENTIALS

Start with what is taxed.

Core rates under the 2026 Union Taxation Law. [1]

WHAT CHANGED / 01 APR 2026

What changed this tax year.

Effective from 1 April 2026. [1] [5]

BEV

BEV taxation changes

Battery electric vehicles attract 5% specific goods tax. Their commercial tax exemption is removed; the standard 5% applies.

Check each tax base separately; these are not a simple combined rate.
NEW BUSINESSES

A higher new-business exemption

The annual net-profit exemption for qualifying new MSMEs, cottage and small-scale industries rises from MMK 15 million to 20 million.

First three consecutive years, including the start year. Eligibility conditions apply; this is not a turnover allowance.
SPECIFIC GOODS

Review alcohol & tobacco bands

Specific goods tax amounts and price bands change for tobacco and alcohol products. Check the current schedule for the product.

Separate from commercial tax. Check before importing or selling.

Turnover threshold & input tax

Qualifying domestic manufacturing, trading and services have a MMK 50 million annual turnover threshold. This is not a blanket import exemption or a waiver of registration duties. Input tax credit requires the prescribed supporting records. [1] [2]

PAYROLL / PERSONAL INCOME TAX

Payroll tax,
one band at a time.

Personal income tax uses progressive rates of 0–25%. After applicable reliefs, each part of taxable income is taxed at its corresponding band. [1]

Annual salary up to MMK 4.8 million is exempt

Above that threshold, assess the full salary with applicable reliefs and bands. MMK 4.8 million is not a universal deduction.
